Audition Now

For this show to actually exist, we're going to need to put a team together.

We'll be able to pay for your time (we're currently figuring out budgets and looking at £20/hour for the first batch of episodes, but we'd love to review and scale up as we go).

To apply for any one of these roles, please send an introductory email to thesiltverses@gmail.com, highlighting any previous experience, linking to any previous work, and including an audition MP3 file if you're applying for an acting role.

If you'd find it useful to read through more of the premise, the audition library also contains:

  • the full draft script for Episode 1

  • Some extra info about the setting and themes

If you have any extra accessibility needs or questions, feel free to let us know.

Auditions are open to everyone, but we're particularly interested in receiving applications from people of colour & from people who identify as LGBTQ+. No specific accents are required. All pronouns are open to change, and please feel free to audition for more than one character if you'd like.

Everything can be found bundled together here.

Also, there are spoilers below.

Crew - Audio Editor

Commitment: High (we'd really like you to stick around for the full season)

Someone who can make us sound not-shit. Experience with audio editing essential, experience on a podcast or audio-drama preferred.

We'll work with you on collating the audio, and keep a stipend set aside for SFX and theme music. If you have any brilliant ideas or experimental inclinations of your own, we'd love to work with you on them.

There's no audition lines, but you should definitely have a read of the full draft script to see if it seems like something you could work with.

Closing date: 16 May 2020.

Cast - Lead Roles

Commitment: High

The following two roles are crucial to the show - you'll often be carrying out the bulk of the acting on any given episode.

You'll need to provide a mixture of narration and dialogue. An ability to slip back and forth between dreamlike reflection, thoughtful unease and panicked terror is helpful.

Please send through an MP3 file with your audition. Closing date: 16 May 2020.

Carpenter

Pronouns: She/her

Age: 30+

Carpenter is a well-travelled, fiercely independent and bluntly spoken agent of the Trawler-Man's secret religion. She's spent the past decade of her life investigating the signs and miracles that crop up along the White Gull River.

If anyone can be considered our protagonist in this story, it's Carpenter. As she journeys upriver, she'll be gradually drawn into a confrontation with her own family and faith.

Faulkner

Pronouns: Any (written in full draft script as he/him)

Age: 30 or under

Carpenter's travelling companion, Faulkner appears at first glance to be an irritating dead weight and sidekick - a young, untested acolyte with an earnest attitude to their faith.

Over time, we come to discover that Faulkner has hidden depths, a predilection for manipulation, and grand ambitions of their own, taking on more of an antagonist's role...

Cast - Recurring roles

Commitment: Medium

The following two roles are recurring, but lower commitment, averaging out at around a dialogue or monologue scene per episode.

You may have a more substantial moment in the spotlight later on...

Please send through an MP3 file with your audition. Closing date: 16 May 2020.

Mason

Pronouns: Any (written in full draft script as she/her)

Age: 40+

Carpenter and Faulkner's handler, and an authority figure within the Priory of Tide and Flesh. Familial and reassuring, even when pitting the two of them against one another.

Also serves as a voice of the faith in narration to fill out the religion's history to listeners.

Sid Wright (Starting Your Day Right)

Pronouns: Any

Sid is a local radio DJ heard on the outskirts of the story, filling us in on snippets of lore and the wider plot.

Over time, we come to understand that Sid is themselves a sacrifice - driving themselves to exhaustion, broadcasting endlessly without sleep in honour of one of the setting's licenced gods. Their monologues will gradually go from cheerful to manic to genuinely horrific.

Cast - minor roles

Commitment: Medium/low

The following roles are for parts that appear in a single episode, with a relatively small number of lines.

You can find full character summaries for each role, as well as audition lines, here.

Please send through an MP3 file with your audition. Closing date: 31 May 2020.

Peterson

Pronouns: Any

Age: 30+

An absent-minded bookseller - and a member of another forbidden faith - who fills us in on some lore and helps move the plot forward.

Mr Finch

Pronouns: He/him

Age: 40+

A sour and unfriendly farmer with a missing husband - who appears to be concealing a secret god upon his property. Gets a big monologue.

Jade

Pronouns: She/her

A rambler, and one half of an arguing couple, encountered by Carpenter in a dark and dangerous wood. Things get scary. More to her than meets the eye.

Clint

Pronouns:  He/him

A rambler, and one half of an arguing couple, encountered by Carpenter in a dark and dangerous wood. Things get scary. Precisely no more to him than meets the eye.

Stanton

Pronouns:  Any

One of the local fisherfolk who attempts to blackmail Faulkner. Suffers for it.
